How to Build a Telegram AI Agent That Handles Customer Inquiries, Team Alerts, and Follow-Ups

SIsivaguru·

Your team already lives in Telegram. Customer inquiries, internal alerts, status updates, follow-up reminders — they all land in the same chat stream. You can answer them yourself, or you can set up an AI agent that handles the pattern work and routes the exceptions to you.

A Telegram AI agent is not a chatbot that replies to every message. It's an agent that reads each message, decides what to do, and acts — answer the simple question, alert the right person, log the request, follow up after a set time. All inside the same Telegram chat where your team already works.

Here's how to set it up in LotsAgent.

Step 1: Connect LotsAgent to Telegram

LotsAgent has Telegram as a native deployment channel. You don't build a separate bot with BotFather and wire it to an API. You configure the channel inside the agent.

From your agent dashboard:

  1. Open the agent you want to deploy (or create a new one with the Agent Builder)
  2. Go to Channels and select Telegram
  3. Scan the QR code to link your Telegram account
  4. Choose the chat or group where the agent should listen

That's it. The agent can now see messages sent to that chat. It won't read your entire history — it sees messages from the moment you connect it forward.

The same pattern works for Slack, email, and the web UI. You configure once, then choose which channels to activate.

Step 2: Configure the Agent to Handle Inquiries

The most common use case: someone sends a question to your Telegram group or bot, and the agent answers it — or decides it needs a human.

Set the agent's system prompt with:

  • What types of questions it can answer directly (pricing, hours, status checks, product info)
  • What needs a human (account-specific issues, refunds, custom requests)
  • Who to notify and how when it escalates

Example prompt:

You are a support triage agent for [company]. Answer questions about pricing, availability, and product features from your knowledge. For account-specific issues, payment problems, or refund requests, respond with "This needs a human — I've notified the team" and tag the on-call user.

The agent reads the message, decides which bucket it falls into, and acts. No rules to write. No if-this-then-that chains.

Step 3: Set Up Team Alert Routing

Not all messages are customer inquiries. Your team might use a Telegram channel for internal alerts — deployment notifications, error reports, status changes from monitoring tools.

You can configure the agent to:

  • Read each alert and determine severity
  • Escalate critical alerts (P0/P1) to a specific user or secondary channel
  • Summarize non-critical alerts into a daily digest
  • Log every alert to a connected tool (Google Sheets, Notion, Linear)

The agent doesn't just forward alerts. It triages them. A Kubernetes pod restart notification gets a different response than a production outage alert.

Step 4: Automate Follow-Ups

This is where a Telegram AI agent moves from reactive to proactive.

Configure the agent to track conversations that need follow-up:

  • A customer says "I'll check and get back to you" — the agent sets a reminder to follow up in 24 hours if no reply
  • A support ticket is escalated — the agent checks back after 4 hours for status
  • A weekly report is due — the agent posts a reminder to the channel on Friday morning

LotsAgent's Tasks system handles the timing. You set the trigger (cron schedule, elapsed time after a message, webhook), and the agent picks up where it left off. No separate cron service needed.

Step 5: Deploy the Same Agent Everywhere

Here's the part that saves real time: the agent you built for Telegram also works across every other channel from the same configuration.

Enable the email channel, and the same agent handles customer emails with the same memory and tools. Enable the web UI, and team members can chat with it directly from the browser. Enable the API, and your tools can trigger it programmatically.

You don't build one agent for Telegram and a separate one for email. You build one agent and choose where it runs.

What a Telegram AI Agent Actually Changes

Before: A team member reads every incoming message, decides what to do, responds or escalates manually, and remembers to follow up later. That works for 10 messages a day. At 50 or 100, it breaks.

After: The agent handles the pattern work — answers known questions, routes unknowns, triages alerts, and tracks follow-ups. Your team stays in Telegram. They see what the agent handled and what needs their attention. Nothing is lost.
